The Background
ScotEID is a livestock traceability system capturing data from keepers, markets and abattoirs to track the movements of sheep, goats, pigs and cattle.
For cattle moves to markets, abattoirs, private sale, shows; births and deaths, this data is currently captured by the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) on to their Cattle Tracing System (CTS) for Great Britain. However CTS is an ageing system which is no longer capable of changing to meet the requirements of today’s cattle industry.
CTS is being replaced by systems in Scotland, England and Wales. Northern Ireland already has its own system.
The Switch Over
The Switch Over represents all abattoirs, markets, keepers, agents and farm software management companies changing to use ScotEID from CTS and CTS Online. All those that use CTS or CTS Online for enquiries and data lookups will switch to ScotEID.
To reduce the burden on BCMS from switching everyone across all at once, we have agreed to switch the abattoirs first, then the markets, followed by the rest. Abattoirs switching first are those that use the CTS ‘SIS’ method of update or use the CTS web service to send their data to CTS. Abattoirs that use CTSOnline or the BCMS Self Service Line to record their cattle data must continue to use these methods until the Keeper Switch when online entry is then available on ScotEID.
When an abattoir switches over
When an abattoir ‘switches over’ to ScotEID, the data captured by the abattoir; that is the moves from the farm to the abattoir and the deaths, are sent directly to ScotEID.
This can be via the use of a web service allowing the data to be automatically sent to ScotEID. The web service returns data records that don’t pass the required validations. Some examples of the validation are;
- the animal ID must be valid,
- the departure CPHs must be valid (the farm the animal has come from)
- the movement dates must be valid - the departure date can’t be after the arrival date,
- the animal can’t already be recorded as dead when turning up at an abattoir.
Then allowing the abattoir to correct the data and resend. If the abattoir has any queries regarding data records that failed validation ScotEID are available to help.
Contacting ScotEID
An abattoir contacting ScotEID can do so by phone or email.
ScotEID Helpline : 01466 794323
ScotEID email: help@scoteid.com.
An abattoir may wish to contact ScotEID regarding amendments to their data on ScotEID that they are unable to send through the web service, for example, where a move may need to be deleted because it turned out to be a different animal from the passport presented.
It is important for the abattoir to contact ScotEID if they are experiencing difficulties in uploading data as we can work together to ensure notification dates are not impacted and delays are kept to a minimum.
Abattoir Monitoring
The data recording by the abattoirs is monitored daily. This ensures that abattoirs experiencing any issues are identified as soon as possible and the issues addressed. It’s essential that the abattoirs receive the support they need from ScotEID and that ScotEID receives accurate and timely data from the abattoirs.
The ScotEID help team can be contacted via the ScotEID Helpline.
